I wish they taught a class on what being a normal human is like

Like, the normal amount of pain is zero. The normal amount of wishing you weren’t ever born is zero. Food isn’t supposed to itch or hurt*. Going numb (any time outside sitting in one position too long) isn’t normal. Passing out isn’t normal. Normal people take like 10-20 minutes to fall asleep, and sleep like 6-9 hours. You’re supposed to get one period a month, which is manageable with a few tampons or pads a day and lasts 3-6 days.

These are all things I had to find out later, like a moron.

(fibromyalgia, depression, allergies, cataplexy, narcolepsy, PCOS and endometriosis)

*spicy food is supposed to hurt?

spoonie-isms

Sneezing when you see bright light? Normal.

Sneezing hurting your ribs so bad it makes breathing hard? Not normal.

spoonie-isms

It’s normal to hear a fluttering in your ears when you yawn. It’s not normal for your ears to hurt so much your teeth hurt too.

It’s normal to sleep badly and wake up sore every now and then. It’s not normal to lay awake because pain is keeping you up.

It’s normal to be nervous to see a doctor. It’s not normal to put off care because of your anxitey

spoonie-isms

So many times I’ve realized something about my body is super messed up when I’m like “you know how when X, Y?” And all my friends are like…no. I don’t experience X.

A couple good additions from the notes:

image

(image description: screenshot of a reply to this post from fiddlysticks that says “Took me up until very recently to learn headaches aren’t supposed to feel heavy and fuzzy, make you extra sensitive to light and sound, be debilitating, and last about 3 days lol)

image

(image description: screenshot of a reply to this post from raw-squid that says “Also like period cramps arent supposed to literally wake you up, even with the strongest over the counter painkillers :) )

Some additions from my own experience:

-Crunchy foods like toast or pizza are apparently not supposed to cut up the inside of your mouth and make you bleed- that’s unusually fragile skin and might indicate a connective tissue disorder

-Wearing jeans or bulky jackets isn’t supposed to make you feel like you’re dying- that’s a sensory processing difference, more specifically tactile defensiveness

-Ribs are not supposed to dislocate when you laugh too hard (connective tissue disorder again)

-Waking up exhausted every single day isn’t supposed to happen- could be any number of underlying conditions

-Standing up is not supposed to cause your heart rate to skyrocket and you to get super dizzy- that’s dysautonomia, anemia, or something similar

-Constantly sitting like a pretzel as a teen or adult mean nothing, but if other people are baffled by how you’re comfortable in those positions, you might be hypermobile or neurodivergent or both!

-The normal amount of seeing double is almost none!  And even if you’ve seen double your whole life, the eye doctor can still prescribe you glasses that fix it

-Have a few “floaters” in your vision is normal, having constant showers of them that interfere with your vision is not

Basically, just because everyone in your family experiences something doesn’t mean it’s normal, it might mean there’s something genetic going on and you should ask a “control group” friend

audkitty

• Food isn’t supposed to make your mouth itch. That’s an allergy

• Coffee isn’t supposed to put you to sleep

• Your period is not supposed to be more painful than labor (found that out with child #2)

• Your friends do not hate you. Yes, even when they’re too busy to answer your text. That’s RSD

• 100 and 1000 are not the same number. Most people don’t transpose numbers regularly. Most people do not find Algebra easier than arithmetic because variables mean less numbers to accidentally mix up. That’s dyscalculia

• Lights in the distance should be round. If they stretch like stars have your eyes checked for astigmatism

spoonie-isms

Everyone always talked about halos and I didn’t realize until I saw a picture of normal vs astigmatism to realize how much it affects me. The points take up my whole field of vision, top to bottom.

most people cant hear the buzz/hum of large household appliances or lights being on, thats autism

if it takes you an hour or more to fall asleep on average thats probably either autism or adhd, but could be other stuff, if meds dont improve it go to a sleep specialist to see

some people simply do not have 24 hour circadian rhythms. if you find the time you are asleep vs awake every day slowly crawls forward until for some periods you are nocturnal and then after another while you are diurnal again, this is probably you

spicy food causes your mouth to be more sensitive to heat, so if youre feeling pain/discomfort thats not heat related while eating it youre probably allergic to something in the meal

if you find yourself wishing you could be a different gender you can just try that to see if you like it

most people can just do things. if you feel completely unable to do something even if you want/need to and have to trick yourself into it, thats executive dysfunction. could be adhd could be some other mental illness

if caffeine puts you to sleep thats also adhd

if you regularly completely forget the plots things you saw/read/played a year or more ago/have similar memory loss issues with other things in your life, that too is almost definitely adhd (but if your memory loss is more extensive there could be other factors too)

themysteriousinternetentity

The normal odds of making it through any given meal without vomiting immediately afterwards are 100%.

jackironsides

If your sinuses are always partly blocked, whether or not there’s anything in there, it’s hayfever, even if it’s year round (@past me). And if your sinuses are always swollen, you’re more likely to have mucus blocking them too. You don’t necessarily have a cold.

Also, if you have year-round hayfever, go read up about Histamine Intolerance and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. ESPECIALLY if you also have things like ME/CFS and fibromyalgia, because they seem to often be comorbid. The Swiss Interest Group for Histamine Intolerance (SIGHI) has info on their website, including the long list of other symptoms that can be caused by high histamine. Histamine is a signalling chemical, and annoyingly turns up pretty much everywhere in the body.

You might find changing your diet settles more than your hayfever. I found that my recent and inexplicable reflux suddenly stopped after I dropped my histamine levels. (Also the bioflavonoid quercetin was more effective at letting me breathe properly than every other over the counter antihistamine I’ve tried 🥲)

ms-demeanor

This is a chart that explains poop that is normal and poop that is not. It is not normal to bleed when you defecate, it is not normal to take more than a few minutes to move your bowels, it is not normal to defecate only once or twice a week. It is also not normal for stool to be primarily liquid, or to need to defecate more than a couple times a day. If you are experiencing abnormal defecation for a long period of time talk to your doctor about gastrointestinal issues like IBS, Crohn’s, and Celiac.

Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.

Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.

This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.

wingsformypillow

Holy shit thank you OP. I lived on the east coast and moved to AZ 4 years ago… thought I was done with this stuff. Literally this is the first I heard about it so thank you for getting the word out.

felixcloud6288

Shit. I have a post I've been holding onto about hurricane preparation. One moment, I'll post it.

zagreus-is-not-a-fuckin-troll

This is like. Freakish. Due to the Coriolis Effect pushing northern hemisphere hurricanes west, and the lack of Gulf Stream warm water fuel, hurricanes are exceedingly rare on the west coast of North America.

The only tropical storm with hurricane-force winds believed to have hit Southern California came in October 1858, when a hurricane struck San Diego, according to a 2004 report in the American Meteorological Society.

Never, since scientific records of hurricanes started in 1949, has a storm with hurricane strength winds hit this far north on the west coast of the continent. We're looking at a once in a century event here. Or at least what used to be once in a century.

Ik who I'm talking to, this is Tumblr. East coast folks, do y'all remember Hurricane Irene, when we were youths? Remember how bad it was? That was a Category 3. Hilary is a Category 4, one below Katrina. On the west coast, where people are way more likely to be unprepared, and infrastructure unlikely to be built to withstand, hurricane strength winds or flooding.

This is going to be a catastrophe.

Well, you know, some bathroom graffiti offers insight.

madfishmonger

Red marker handwriting on a bathroom wall. Text reads:

“Boss made a dollar
Granddad made a dime
But that was a poem
From a simpler time.

Boss made a thousand
Gave pa a cent
But that penny paid the mortgage
Or at least it paid the rent

Now Boss makes a million
And gives us jack
Smugly blames the workers
For the labor that he lacks.”

“While cameras generated a mechanical reproduction of a scene, she explained that it does so only after a human develops a “mental conception” of the photo, which is a product of decisions like where the subject stands, arrangements and lighting, among other choices.

“Human involvement in, and ultimate creative control over, the work at issue was key to the conclusion that the new type of work fell within the bounds of copyright,” Howell wrote.”

Let me just be a mythology geek for a minute...

So... Persephone...

image

So, Stray Gods establishes that the gods for the most part do not remember their pasts too well. Because some knowledge gets lost each time the eidolon passes on.

To me this kinda makes for a fun option, though. Because... I am too much of a mythology geek not to look at this from the perspective of the development of the mythology. ESPECIALLY when it comes to Persephone.

You see, Persephone as a goddess is older than Hades. As in: Myths about her have been around for a much longer time than myths about Hades. Originally Persephone and Demeter were worshiped as "the two queens" by some old cults. We do not know much in detail what that worship entailed, but we know that for some people in the very, very early days of these gods, the two in their duality were very, very important.

You also might know that Persephone has the alternative name of Kore. Well, Persephone translated means Bringer Of Destruction, while Kore just means "the girl". And given that there is power in names and what not it is believed that the name Persephone was not spoken because people were afraid of summoning her. (Just as later on the name Hades was not spoken, with him being referred to as Ago, Aner or Laos.)

Now, the name Hades translates to "the Unseen". And... that brings me to one big thing.

Mythologically speaking Hades was originally not the god of the underworld or the dead. Again, he as a god came on fairly late and originally he was probably just an aspect of Poseidon, that after a while became worshiped as an individual deity. But even as such... If we look at the "three godly brothers" they are in fact God of the Sky, God of the Sea, and God of the Earth. Hades as a god is fairly new, but his association with the underworld and him being the king of the dead is even newer...

What I am getting at: There is a good chance that it was in fact Persephone who originally was the Goddess of Dead and Queen of the Underworld - with her and Demeter as the "two Queens" taking a kinda Yin-Yang theme of Demeter as a goddess of life and Persephone as a goddess of death.

Because let me make one thing clear: Persephone (you know, BRINGER OF MOTHERFUCKING DISTRUCTION) was never a goddess of spring. She just became associated with spring through the entire Hades and Persephone myth, with her returning to Demeter being the reason for spring. But she, as a goddess, is not a bringer of spring.

So, why am I rambling about this here?

Well, because if we took in this information... There is a good chance that at some point too long ago for them to remember Hades and Zeus usurped the throne of the underworld from Persephone, who was originally the queen.

God darn it, I need to write a fic about this, don't I?

To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)

This was such a formative movie

musicalhell

This shit was revolutionary for the mid-90s. Among other things it helped me understand that transgender and cross-dressing were completely separate things.

aqueerkettleofish

To this day, I am in awe of the fact that Patrick Swayze not only campaigned hard to get the audition, not only auditioned in dress and makeup, but spent most of the day leading up to the audition walking around LA in dress and makeup.

This was a man who could sing, dance, act, ride a horse, fight, and walk in heels, he had nothing to prove to anyone, and he is MISSED.

aqueerkettleofish

Okay, I’m not done feeling about this.

If you’re younger, you may not know Patrick Swayze; he was Taken From Us in 2009. But Patrick Swayze was an icon of masculinity. Men were willing to watch romantic movies because Patrick Swayze was in them.

Patrick Swayze was fucking beefcake.

And this man didn’t just agree to do a movie where the only time he’s not actually in drag is the first three minutes, which involve stepping out of the shower, doing make up, and getting Dressed. He has ONE LINE that is delivered in a man’s voice, and it’s not during those three minutes.

And if you watch those three minutes, you see a stark difference between his portrayal of Miss Vida Bohéme and Wesley Snipes as Noxeema Jackson. (I am not criticizing Snipes’ performance. They were different roles.) Noxeema was a comedy character. Chi-Chi was a comedy character. But Miss Vida Bohéme was a dramatic role, played by a dramatic powerhouse.

When Vida sits down in front of the mirror, she sees a man. And she doesn’t like it.

image

Then she puts her hair up, and her face lights up.

image

“Ready or not,” she says. “Here comes Mama.

And while Noxeema is having fun with her transformation (at one point breaking into a giggling fit after putting on pantyhose), Vida is simply taking pleasure in bringing out her true self. And when she’s done, she sees this:

image

And you can FEEL her pride.

All of this from an actor who, up to this point, walked on to the screen and dripped testosterone.

jenroses

It matters that this happened in 1995. It wouldn’t fly today, wouldn’t be the right choice, we’ve moved past it, but it mattered and was important that it happened the way it happened then. It’s one of the stepping stones.

luidilovins

What i love about this artist’s depictions of women is even the sexualized ones the woman is always genuinely happy and enjoying herself. Frolicking or making funny faces, she’s living her life and looking sexy while doing it, not sitting in a sexual pose for the audience’s view.
